Okay, so I’ve been wanting to remake a classic bag for a while now, and I finally decided to go for it. The Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag in the small size is just so iconic, you know? I mean, it’s been around since 2007 and it’s still going strong. That’s what I call timeless! Seeing all those stylish women like Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid carry it, I knew I had to have one of my own, but handmade by me!
Getting Started
First thing I did was to find some good quality Saffiano leather. It wasn’t easy, let me tell you! This stuff has a really specific texture, that cross-hatch pattern, and you can’t just use any old leather. After a lot of searching and feeling up different swatches, I finally found the perfect one. It had that luxurious feel and just the right amount of stiffness.
The Pattern
Next up was the pattern. Now, I’m no professional pattern maker, but I’m pretty good at figuring things out. I looked at a ton of pictures of the Galleria bag online, studied the dimensions, and started sketching. I used some old cardboard to make a rough template, making adjustments here and there until it looked about right. It was a lot of trial and error, I won’t lie!
Cutting and Sewing
Once I was happy with the pattern, it was time to cut the leather. This was nerve-wracking! I measured everything twice, even three times, before making a single cut. Slow and steady wins the race, right? Cutting Saffiano is a bit tricky because it’s quite firm, but my trusty rotary cutter did a pretty good job. It’s not easy to get such a perfect cut, it took me a lot of time to do this!
Then came the sewing. Oh boy, this was a whole other challenge. I had to practice with some scrap leather to get my stitching straight and even. I’ve used my sewing machine many times, but this is a whole new level! I used a strong thread in a matching color and made sure to use the right needle for leather. And I was really careful to stitch accurately, making sure all the edges lined up perfectly.
The Lining and Hardware
For the lining, I wanted to get that authentic Prada feel, so I looked for a Jacquard fabric. I even found one with the Prada name stitched in, but the thing is, in the real bags, every other line is upside down! It’s a little detail that makes a big difference. Replicating it was super hard, but I managed it somehow, don’t ask me how!
The hardware was another story. I searched high and low for the right buckles, zippers, and that signature Prada triangle logo. Let me tell you, finding good quality hardware is not easy. But eventually, I found some pieces that were close enough and looked pretty darn good.
Putting It All Together
Assembling the bag was like putting together a puzzle. I had to attach the handles, the zipper, the lining, and all the little details. It took a lot of patience and a steady hand, but seeing it all come together was so satisfying. I even added those little feet at the bottom to protect the leather, just like the real thing!
The Final Result
After all that work, I finally finished my remake of the Small Prada Galleria Saffiano Leather Bag! It’s not perfect, of course, there are a few little imperfections here and there, but I’m so proud of it. It looks pretty close to the original, and it feels amazing to carry around. I even get compliments on it! Who knew I had it in me to make something like this? It’s definitely a labor of love, and I learned so much in the process. Now I’m thinking, what bag should I remake next?
