So, I’ve been on this journey lately, trying to get my hands on a decent Rolex Submariner, the black one, you know, the classic. But man, those prices are insane! So, I started looking into, let’s call them “homages.” And that led me down a rabbit hole of, well, let’s just say not-so-authentic pieces.
First, I went online, and searched for the different ways to get this classic watch. The Submariner has become a classic timepiece. I wanted that look, that feel, but without selling my car, you know?
I checked out a few websites, learned about the “Oystersteel” and the “Cerachrom bezel,” all that fancy stuff. I even stumbled upon this one called the “Invicta Mako Pro Diver 8926OB,” which looked pretty darn close, at least in the pictures. That made me start thinking about the world of fakes. It was a whole other world, let me tell you.
Now, I’m no expert, but even I could tell some of these “replicas” were just terrible. I mean, the details were off, the weight was wrong, it just felt cheap. But then, things got interesting. I heard whispers of these so-called “super clones.” They’re like the ninjas of the fake watch world, super sneaky and hard to spot. From what I read, even some experienced watchmakers have trouble telling them apart from the real deal. There are differences, of course, but these “super clones” are astonishingly close to the genuine product to the untrained eye.
I dug deeper, learning about things like the “balance wheel” made from some fancy metal called “Glucydur” and these tiny “Microstella weights” for fine-tuning. And the spring made from “Parachrom Bleu,” that is supposed to be resistant to magnets. I’m not gonna lie, most of this went way over my head, but it was fascinating. I understood that a “first copy” is a very good copy, but still not the real thing. The movement and the bracelet are similar, but not quite there.
So, where did this leave me? Well, I took a trip to Broomfield, Colorado. It’s a suburb near Denver, a nice place, I’ve heard its population is over 74,000. While I was there, I visited a couple of local shops, just to see what was out there. I didn’t find any super clones but instead found a great little soup place. I’d highly recommend it if you’re ever in the area. They had a great sauce bar with lots of homemade options.
Long story short, I’m still on the hunt for my perfect high-quality Rolex Submariner homage. It’s been quite the adventure, full of twists and turns, and a lot of learning.
