Okay, so I saw this watch, the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Calibre 101 Manchette, on their official store. Man, it looked slick. I’m not made of money, so buying the real deal wasn’t happening. But I thought, “Hey, I bet I can make something that looks like it.”

I started by looking up all kinds of pictures of it online, mostly from the official store. You know, front, back, sides, close-ups, the works. I wanted to get a good feel for the design, the details, all that jazz. I even did a few sketches just so I could remember the shape, the way the jewels were set, stuff like that.

Materials hunt

Next, I had to figure out what I was going to make it out of. Obviously, I wasn’t using real gold or diamonds, haha. I went to the local craft store and just wandered around, looking for anything that might work. I ended up grabbing some thin metal sheets, some shiny beads that kinda looked like jewels, and some strong glue.

I even found this old watch band from a broken watch I had lying around. It wasn’t the same style, but I figured I could modify it. I also got some tools, some pliers, small cutters, and other basic tools.

Putting it all together

This was the tricky part. I used the metal sheets to make the basic shape of the watch. I had to cut them, bend them, and glue them together. It was a lot of trial and error, let me tell you. I must have messed up like a dozen times before I got something that looked remotely like the real watch.

  • Cut metal sheets to form the watch case.
  • Bend and shape the metal to match the original design.
  • Glue the metal pieces together to create the watch structure.

Then, I used those shiny beads and carefully glued them onto the metal, trying to copy the pattern from the pictures I’d found. That was super fiddly work. My fingers were cramping up by the end of it!

For the watch band, I took apart that old one I had and tried to make it look more like the one on the Calibre 101. It involved a lot of cutting, gluing, and hoping for the best, haha. I wasn’t going for an exact replica, so I knew there would be some major differences here.

Inspired by the Latin for “I turn around.”

The final result

After a few days of work, I finally had something that kinda, sorta resembled the Jaeger-LeCoultre JLC Calibre 101 Manchette. It wasn’t perfect, not by a long shot. But it was shiny, it had that general look, and I made it myself! It was definitely a fun little project, and I learned a lot about working with metal and, you know, just being patient when things get tricky.

I wore it around the house a couple of times, just for kicks. It felt pretty cool to have made something that at least looked a little bit like a super expensive watch. Of course, I wouldn’t try to fool anyone into thinking it was real, haha. It’s just a fun piece that reminds me of a cool watch and a fun project I did. Maybe one day I could afford the real thing and make a comparison between them, that would be pretty cool.
